Math: Problem Solving fun

At the end of last week, the students gathered in small learning teams to practice their problem solving skills. They did a great job of cooperating and came up with many ways to approach the problem. It is always great when they get to share their math ideas.

Here is a sample of the problem just in case you would like to give it a try as a family. It is also on our Google Classroom with a Google Jamboard document to help share your solution if you wish.

Family Reading Bingo

The government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed January 27th as Family Literacy Day and the week of January 24th to 30th as Family Literacy Week.
The theme this year is:  Travel the World Together!
It is so fun to curl up with a family member, and “travel” to a different land or place while exploring a love of reading and learning together!!
Enjoy our Family Reading BINGO activity card this week together and bring it back at the end of the week to put your name in for a draw where you get to choose a book to order!! Your child brought their BINGO card home today!  It will be due back on February 1st.  Have fun!

Addition and Subtraction

Our class started a mathematics unit on addition and subtraction.  Your child will develop strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers by using addition charts, mental math, estimation, Base Ten Blocks, place-value mats, and pencil and paper.

In this unit, your child will:

  • Recall basic addition and subtraction facts
  • Identify and apply relationships between addition and subtraction
  • Add and subtract 2-digit numbers
  • Use mental math to add and subtract
  • Estimate sums and differences
  • Add and subtract 3-digit numbers

The ability to use a variety of strategies to add and subtract leads to the development of a strong sense of number.  I will post the strategies that we are learning as we move through the unit.
